Screw your superstitions!

Just got email from Randy's wife - they found a 100% match in the registry! ONE HUNDRED PERCENT MATCH! Is that fucking awesome or what!? His transplant will be in February. I'm SO happy for them. What wonderful news to start a new year with eh?!

So, Donovan had his cath today, and it seems like everything looks pretty good. They're still going to put the surgery off a little longer, maybe as soon as 2 weeks but probably longer than that. Apparently his iron was low which can affect the oxygen levels, so they're going to put him on an iron supplement and see him weekly for a while and see if that helps. But the doctor said that he's waited long enough to have made it through the high-risk period anyway, and that whether they do it in 2 weeks or 2 months isn't really all that different anyway. I still hope they wait a while longer, because I'm just not ready to face the surgery and its risks yet, but then, I probably never will really be ready.

Anyway, the cath went well, his oxygen levels were up quite a bit in recovery. There were no complications, and although he was slow to wake up, he did better this time than last. We were there for about 12 hours and then came home. He's still sort of 'out of it' but doing great. He really is a little trooper. I think he takes all of his procedures better than we do.

It's been a fuck of a week - 5 doctor's appointments, one tubal ligation, and one balloon cath later, I'm dead on my feet and headed for bed. Have a good one!

PS: Are you superstitious?
There's a full moon, it's Friday the 13th, and Nova was in slot 13 in recovery. . . I'm not superstitious about full moons or the number 13, but if anything, today blows the bad-luck theory all to hell, eh?

  1. Yeah, it has been a hell of a week. And, one that I would never wish on anybody. I'm glad things are going so well for you there.

  2. Erin, I've always considered the number 13 to be a lucky one. Two of my siblings were born on Friday the 13th's. Jonas would have been if he'd been a few hours later. I love fridays, and full moons are just plain gorgeous and powerful. So I can't think of a better combination for you. Superstitions only have the power that we give them.

    BTW, have you ever noticed that hospitals and hotels always skip the #13? Seriously, jump on an elevator some day and check the keypad. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,14.... WTF? Are we really that superstitious?

    That's great news about Randy. I am overjoyed, and just so you know, by sharing your story, there are three girls at work that are going to go register just as soon as we find out where you can do that in this town. The closest place we found was Orlando. Maybe we'll just make a day-trip of it.

    They may not be the ones helping Randy, but the more people there are registered, the better everyone's chances are of finding a match, right?

    And on Donovan, I'm glad to hear that his low O2 was simply due to low iron. Seems like an easy fix for the moment, and gives you a little more time to prepare yourself mentally for his surgery.

    Anyway, I love you, E, and I'm happy for you and all of your family, and I hope that there's nothing but good for you over the next several weeks and months. You, if anyone, deserves it.
